I am presenting a gift to the head of the widow's family. Just one of many things I had to do as the oldest grandson. I may have had as many or more tasks to do during the actual ceremony than my dad did. Since the whole ceremony was conducted in Taiwanese, and all the instructions were in Taiwanese as well, I would have been screwed if I couldn't understand. My mom and sister, who can't speak Chinese at all, were ok because all they had to do was follow everyone else.

Behind me are my dad and uncle. My dad is holding the shrine and my uncle is holding the dolls. The black umbrella is there because the shrine is not supposed to be exposed to the sky until it is burned. Since there were no other male descendents, my dad had to hold the black umbrella himself. I later carried the umbrella for him while walking out of the funeral complex, carrying the picture in my other hand.
